Mugo Pine - Pinus mugo

Pinus is the Latin name for pme trees; mugo is the Tyrolese name for Pinus mugo. This scrub pine, noative to the European Alps, is usually more of a bush than a tree and is a favorite plant of rock gardners throughout the Northern Hemisphere. This highly variable native of Spain and Central Europe has been widely used in home and recreational landscapes because of its reputation for a compact, mound shape.

Unfortunately, plants grown from seed may range from dwarf, compact mounds to tall, single stemmed, large trees. The unwary may find mugo soon encroaching on the front doorstep or a view from a picture window. More recently, limited clonal production of some new, true and reliable dwarfs pro¬mises to reduce or eliminate this overgrowth problem.

Most mugos are multi-stemmed, shrub-like and have needles in clusters of two ranging from 1" to 2" long. The needles are characteristically twisted. Cones are about 1 ½” long, cinnamon-brown and have short prickles on the tips of the scales. This pine seems to adapt to a wide range of soil types but will do best in those of loamy, well drained composition.
